Discover more from No Grass in the Clouds
It’s been — huh, it’s been about four months since I last sent out one of these. But we’’re gonna try to make it a regular-ish thing again. A bunch of you have said it’s helpful to have links to everything I’ve written in one place, and I’ve responded to that by thinking, “OK, good to know”, and then not doing almost anything about it. So, consider this a minor revival of No Grass in the Clouds.
I’m gonna use it is a place to gather up all the links to things I’ve written for ESPN, along with anything else I do: podcasts, videos, radio appearances, entire columns written via airplane banner, and whatever Net Gains: Inside the Beautiful Game’s Revolution-related promotion I’m still doing.
So, Net Gains! You can still buy it, wherever you buy your books. Some updates:
The New York Times selected it as one of the 10 books to read during the World Cup.
I went on the Longform Podcast and spoke to my buddy Max Linsky about my incredibly weird and contingent professional career. He tries to convince me that Net Gains is actually a shadow autobiography.
I spoke to Alex Shephard of The New Republic about my book, the past-and-future of the world’s most popular sport, and everything in between. The url contains what I’m considering to be a description of me: “ryan-ohanlon-soccer-analytics-messi”. Also, Alex came up with my favorite description of the book I’ve heard so far: “an extraordinary account of how soccer actually works”. Pretty good!

Most transfers are bad — and that’s especially true in January. Here are some lessons from the transfer window that was.
Less than two years ago, Carlo Ancelotti was coaching Everton. Now, they’re among the favorites to be relegated. What the hell happened?
We should have a Premier League All-Star team. This is my Premier League All-Star Team.
Darwin Nunez is the West Ham United of strikers, and the same seemingly tortured comparison works for Erling Haaland and Fulham. Just trust me. Well, read the piece, and then trust me.
